Weenect Survey on Blue Monday: Cats as Comforters, Dogs as Fitness Coaches – How Pets Enhance Mental and Physical Health

January not only brings wintery temperatures but also "Blue Monday" – considered by experts to be the gloomiest day of the year. This year, the third Monday of January (January 20, 2025) marks the day. Mental health takes center stage during this time, as psychological disorders are now said to be the second most common cause of sick leave. Pets can play an important role here, as revealed by a recent Weenect survey. This study, conducted with 456 respondents from France, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany, examines how dogs and cats impact their owners' mental and physical health.

Pets as Sources of Happiness and Emotional Support

Nearly all respondents (99%) stated that their pet makes them happier every day. Cat owners, in particular, value the emotional connection with their animals. Three out of four respondents (77%) reported that their four-legged companions have helped them cope with crises. Cats are perceived as especially effective in this regard (82.2%) compared to dogs (71.5%). Additionally, cats provide comfort in times of loneliness, with almost all cat owners (96.7%) acknowledging this vital mental support.

Dogs: Personal Trainers and Routine Builders

Dogs are true fitness coaches: nearly all dog owners (95%) reported that their pet helps them stay active, whether through walks or playful activities. Furthermore, dogs significantly contribute to daily routines, with 85.9% of dog owners noting that their furry friend helps them maintain regular habits due to frequent walks.

Stress Reduction: Cats Leading, Dogs Close Behind

Pets have a profound effect on stress management. Four out of five respondents (80%) stated that their pet reduces their stress levels. This effect is more pronounced among cat owners (87.4%) compared to dog owners (74%). The benefits of pets in stress reduction have been recognized for years, which has led many offices and organizations to allow “office dogs” to create a more relaxed and productive work environment.

Achieving New Year's Resolutions with Pet Support

New year, new resolutions: whether it's more exercise, better routines, or simply less stress, pets are ideal companions for achieving these goals. Studies have long shown that animals have a positive impact on mental health, motivating owners to improve their daily lives. Additionally, modern GPS trackers, like those offered by Weenect, can help monitor not only a pet's location in real-time but also their activity levels. These tools provide valuable data for those aiming to stay fit alongside their furry companions, tracking progress and staying motivated.
