A key point in using a GPS tracker is its battery life, as it can be frustrating, even problematic, to have to recharge it regularly. One might also be disappointed not to achieve the same battery life as indicated by the manufacturer. It's important to understand that this battery life isn't the same for everyone and depends on several factors, including the quality of the mobile network and the GPS signal.
A crucial factor in your tracker's battery life is its persistant search for a server connection. When the tracker can't find a mobile network, it intensifies its efforts to establish a connection. This constant searching significantly increases battery consumption. It's essential to understand that areas with no or poor network coverage can affect your device's battery life.
Similarly, searching for a valid GPS signal also drains the battery. If your tracker is placed in an area without GPS signal access, like inside a building, it will double its efforts to communicate with satellites.
The interval between each position determines how frequently the tracker will update and transmit its location. This frequency greatly affects the battery life: the more actions the tracker performs, the quicker the battery drains. Some manufacturers might be tempted to sacrifice real-time tracking to save battery, but at Weenect, we believe a balance is essential for both safety and longevity.
Our trackers are equipped with an innovative motion sensor. Thanks to this accelerometer, the tracker stops sending its position when it's stationary. This significantly limits unnecessary consumption. Moreover, as soon as the tracker starts moving again, it immediately reactivates the position search, ensuring optimal responsiveness.
Power-saving areas can extend your GPS tracker's battery life by several days. To utilise this feature, simply connect the tracker to your Wi-Fi box and set up a power-saving area through your app. When the tracker picks up your Wi-Fi signals, it switches off the GPS location search, as it recognises it's right near the Wi-Fi (there's no need to search for a known position).
When your tracker enters a power-saving area, you have the option to activate Airplane Mode. If this is done, after a minute in this zone, the tracker will halt both its GPS search and communication with our servers. This action further conserves battery, giving the tracker an extended lifespan. Caution: In Airplane Mode, your tracker becomes unreachable. You'll have to wait until it exits the power-saving area to interact with it again. So, it's crucial to use this feature with full awareness of its implications.
The battery life of a tracker is essential for your peace of mind. Several factors can influence its lifespan, whether it's the search for server connection, the GPS signal, or the update frequency of positions. Each of these elements can impact your battery's longevity in different ways. However, thanks to features like the power-saving areas, we effectively extend the tracker's battery life while preserving its core functionalities. It's also worth noting that the tracker's settings can be tailored to meet individual needs and preferences, providing flexibility to every user.
